Homekey Program: Permanent Housing

IMG_StantonInn_001Press Release: County of Orange Receives Notice of Reserved Funding for Two Applications Submitted for State Homekey Program

The County of Orange and Jamboree Housing Corporation submitted three applications as co-applicants and in partnership with the City of Stanton under the State Homekey program, all located in the City of Stanton, for a total request of $28.1 million in funding.

The County recently received word that the State reserved funding for both The Tahiti Motel and Stanton Inn and Suites applications. Although this does not yet represent an award from the State, it is one step closer to securing funding.

Two of the motels identified for Homekey funds and conversion to permanent housing have executed purchase and sale agreements – The Stanton Inn and Suites located at 7161 Katella Avenue, Stanton, CA and The Tahiti Motel located at 11850 Beach Blvd, Stanton, CA. The third site is still in negotiation with the motel owner.

The Stanton Inn and Suites is currently being utilized by the County as a Project Roomkey location. Additionally, Jamboree responded to the County of Orange’s Request For Information with these two sites as potential motel conversions eligible for Homekey funding. Jamboree brings development experience in the conversion of motels and vast experience in the development and operation of supportive housing. Both the County and City also preliminarily identified funding to support the match and operations of the developments. This partnership and collaboration between the County and Jamboree as co-applicants and the partnership of the City is what made for a strong application to the State.

The Homekey program seeks to quickly fund the conversion of motel units into housing as part of the State’s response to COVID-19. If funded, the two projects will create a total of 132 new affordable homes for people experiencing homelessness who have been impacted by COVID-19 in Orange County — a huge win for both public health and addressing the homelessness crisis long-term.

The County of Orange and Jamboree, together with the City of Stanton, continue to await funding decisions from the State and are looking forward to sharing more details about the future housing communities, including the development timeline and types of services the program will offer.
